Introduction to the Union Institute & University WWW Style Guide
Welcome! This guide is designed to assist Union Institute & University
Web publishers in creating and maintaining a simple Web presence
that is specific to a certain area or topic. A set of templates,
or "themes," from which to choose has been created to
assist in the development of your Web site. This style guide will
explain how to approach the organization of your Web site, download
a template, add content, and make your site available to your target
audience. It does not teach you how to operate a Web editor such
as FrontPage. If you've never built a Web page before, you should
sign up for a training class with Instructional
Technology in this software before attempting to build your
page. Feel free, however, to read this guide to get started.
In doing so, you'll get a basic understanding of Web publishing
and the Internet. The common tasks necessary to establish a typical
presence on the Web have been simplified in this guide.
A Brief Introduction to the World Wide Web
The World Wide Web was originally used by scientists and engineers
to share information and ideas with each other regardless of where
they were located. To learn more about the evolution of the Web,
click on the following link: "A
Little History of the World Wide Web".
HTML is the current "language" of the Web. It is used
to "mark-up" Web pages (Hyper Text Mark-up Language =
HTML). Although it may sound a bit intimidating, it is relatively
easy to understand and learn. There are many tools and books available
today that can assist in developing the HTML used to mark up pages.
The Web authoring software package that Union Institute & University
supports is MS FrontPage. You will need this Web software package
installed on your computer to use the enclosed templates. To obtain
FrontPage, please call the help desk at ext. 1137.
Again, to sign up for classes for this Web authoring tool, please
contact the Office of Instructional
Technology.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU READ THROUGH THIS GUIDE IN ITS ENTIRETY
THEN RETURN TO THE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS. Refer to specific
sections, once initially read, as needed.
| IMPORTANT:
